OUR MISSION
The Focus Foundation is dedicated to helping children and families affected by X & Y Variations, Dyslexia, and/or Developmental Dyspraxia. The Focus Foundation believes that through increased awareness, early identification and syndrome-specific treatment, children with these conditions can reach their full potential.

Developmental Dyspraxia

Developmental Dyspraxia, also referred to as Dyspraxia or Childhood Apraxia of Speech, is characterized by impairment in the ability to plan and carry out sensory and motor tasks. Generally, individuals with the disorder appear "out of sync" with their environment.

Symptoms vary and may include poor balance and coordination, clumsiness, bad vision, perception hardships, emotional and behavioral challenges, poor social skills, weak posture, problems with short-term memory and difficulty with reading, writing and speaking. Although children with the disorder may be of average or above average intelligence, they may behave immaturely.

While the prevalence of Developmental Dyspraxia in the general population is unknown, we do know that it occurs four times more often in boys than in girl. Children failing in school is a common concern today; it's likely that many of these boys and girls have Developmental Dyspraxia or an X & Y Variation, or both.

Our Focus

  • To increase early identification of Developmental Dyspraxia
  • To identify those children with Developmental Dyspraxia who also have an X & Y Variation
  • To understand the neurobiology of Developmental Dyspraxia and its relationship to X & Y Variations
  • To promote recovery and early targeted treatment for these children
